GM to Rehire Workers
General Motors plans to rehire workers to build a new small Cadillac at the company's Grand River Assembly plant in Lansing. CEO Dan Ackerson says that will mean the brand will have a small car to compete head-to-head with other smaller cars built by Mercedes and Lexus. 600 workers will be rehired at the plant; the automaker will invest $190 million to accommodate the new production.
Flint Preparing for Devils' Night
The city of Flint is getting ready for tomorrow night: Devils' Night. As Michigan Radio's Steve Carmody reports, city leaders are concerned arsonists may step up their activity this Halloween weekend. Flint has been hit recently by dozens of suspicious fires in abandoned homes. City leaders are working with neighborhood watch groups to prevent weekend blazes.
Election Turnout
With four days to go before Election Day, Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land is predicting 52% of eligible voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, that's about 3.8 million residents. Voters will be deciding on a new Governor, Secretary of State, Attorney General as well as candidates for the state and U.S. legislatures. Turnout in Michigan in 2008, when, of course, the country was electing a new President, was more than 68%.
New Poll Shows Continued Support for GOP
A new Free Press/WXYZ-TV poll shows Michigan voters favoring Republican candidate for Governor Rick Snyder over his opponent Democrat Virg Bernero. Snyder received 55% of the poll to Bernero's 37%. The poll also shows other statewide Republican candidates (including Secretary of State and Attorney General candidates) ahead of their Democratic opponents.
