The second round of meetings in a project to re-imagine Detroit starts tonight.
A presentation will outline some of the problems the city faces – including statistics about its population decline, school quality and employment opportunities. And residents will get to weigh in on questions about where the city should focus its limited resources.
Dan Lijana is a spokesman for Mayor Bing. He says the project staff will use what they learn to draft an analysis of the city’s neighborhoods, expected in April.
"We don’t want anyone to think that come April First there’s going to be a big announcement that has a map that says here’s what’s going to happen here, here’s what’s going to happen here. It’s basically going to be the first part of that conversation."
Mayor Bing has suggested that the city could provide incentives to encourage people to move out of blighted neighborhoods, and into more viable parts of the city. The idea of relocating residents has generated a good number of critics.
