An East Lansing based group is remembering those September 11th victims with ties to Michigan. The Michigan Remembers 9/11 Fund is collecting memories about those who died in the attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon or in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Susan Moriarty is with the Fund. She says it’s important to remember that the attacks struck close to home, not just far away.
“We’re a huge nation…but we cross our borders very easily…anything that happens in New York really also happens in Michigan…and it’s important to recognize that.”
Moriarty says she is moved in particular by the life of a 23 year old woman, Meredith Lynn Whalen, who died in the twin towers, a year after graduating from the University of Michigan.
“For her life to be snuffed out like that…it was patently unfair.”
The Michigan Remembers 911 Fund encourages people to contribute their own memories of Michiganders who died on September 11th on their website.
