A major economic development project in Lansing took an important step today.
Many people opposed the idea of turning a twelve acre portion of Lansing’s old Red Cedar golf course over to developers. But city voters approved the idea last fall, and now the city is officially asking developers to submit their ideas for the property. The city officially issued the Request for Proposals today.
Randy Hannan is the mayor’s chief of staff. He says developers have a month to submit their proposals. That's not a lot of time, but Hannan says it’s enough for developers to give the city a sense of what they think they can do with the former golf course.
“The proposals themselves can describe…they don’t have to drill down into an enormous level of detail…they don’t have to have architectural renderings,” says Hannan, “We should be able to get a pretty good view of what the possibilities are.”
Hannan says, if all goes well, a developer could be chosen by late August or early September. If not, he says the process can be reopened. City leaders hope to gain between three to five million dollars from the sale of the property.
