Former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm will soon be leaving her position as host of Current TV’s “The War Room.”
Her announcement came Wednesday after news that Current was being sold to Al Jazeera, the Qatar-based news network. Al Jazeera hopes the reported $500 million acquisition will increase the media company’s profile in the United States.
On her Facebook page, Granholm said she will return to speaking engagements and teaching. She is a visiting professor of public policy at University of California, Berkeley.
“My agreement with Current was for the duration of the election (and the sale). It has been a very fun adventure; we are blessed with a wonderful team…Thanks to all of you who have been watching, and especially thanks to those who helped achieve a key goal: helping to re-elect the president!” she said.
Granholm has hosted the show since January 2012, and will continue to host for the next few weeks.
As the Detroit News reports, some have linked the former governor with a position in the Obama administration’s second term:
In September, Granholm gave a fiery speech at the Democratic National Convention that included some outsized gestures that drew mixed reviews. Asked in September by The Detroit News if she has talked with Obama about joining his administration in a second term, she confirmed she has talked with him, but offered a careful denial. "I've seen the president several times, but there's been no explicit conversation about anything like that," Granholm said.
