Gilda's Club is an organization that consists of groups across the country which provide laughter and support to cancer patients.

The organization is named after Gilda Radner. She was one of the brightest faces in comedy. The University of Michigan alum was in the original cast of Saturday Night Live. She passed away from ovarian cancer in 1989.

One of her close friends and partner in comedy, Allen Zweibel, spoke with Michigan Radio's Cynthia Canty about Radner.

"She was funny and cute but her vulnerability was something that people hooked into. She wasn't afraid to talk about not getting dates or being a fat kid growing up. People felt like they knew her even if they never met her," said Zweibel.

Zweibel will be in Detroit tonight for Gilda's Big Night Out, a fundraiser for the metro Detroit branch of Gilda's Club.

"When Gilda got sick, her purpose in life was to use her fame to show that you can live a productive and substantial life with cancer," he said. "One of her last wishes was to have more support communities for cancer patients."
