Orion Music + More – Detroit’s newest music festival – took over Belle Isle this past weekend.
Bands blasted metal, rock, electronic dance music – and even gypsy punk –to crowds of tens of thousands.
According to Chris Steffen for the Rolling Stone, the biggest surprise at the festival was a gag by Metallica, the festival’s founders.
A Saturday night set by the mysterious band Dehaan turned out to be a surprise performance by Metallica.
Although Metallica headlined Sunday, at this surprise performance they played their 1983 debut album, Kill ‘Em All, from start to finish to an ecstatic crowd.
Other major headliners included Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Dropkick Murphys, and BASSNECTAR. Highlights from lesser known bands included sets by Infectious Grooves, Japandroids, Death Grips, and Gogol Bordello.
The festival also included a car show and a skate ramp sponsored by Vans.
