Student-run Michigan Daily going strong for 125 years

In an era when newspapers are struggling, the Michigan Daily has been going strong since 1890.

The student-run newspaper at the University of Michigan has produced eight Pulitzer Prize winners and many others have gone on to make their mark in journalism and writing.

"When you're working at this paper you really do learn to see yourself as a journalist and not just as a student with a hobby," said writer Anna Clark.

Clark recently wrote a piece about the Daily's 125th anniversary for the Michigan Alumnus magazine. Clark graduated from U of M in 2003 and was a member of the Michigan Daily team.

"It's standards are so high that it has really proved to be a powerful training ground for generations of journalists," Clark said.

Jake Offenhartz, a Michigan Daily alum and a current production intern on Stateside agreed, "There's no one looking over your shoulder, you are responsible for yourself and your own content and I think that's one of the huge advantages of the Daily."

Laura Schinagle, summer editor in chief at the Michigan Daily said, "I've learned so much just by the mistakes I've made and having to make decisions on your own without consulting an adult...it's just a really great jumping point for not only if you want to go into journalism but for any job in the future."

Stateside is produced daily by a dedicated group of producers and production assistants. Listen daily, on-air, at 3 and 8 p.m., or subscribe to the daily podcast wherever you like to listen.
