Several Flint cultural institutions are getting a big boost, thanks to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
The Flint Cultural Center Corporation, Flint Institute of Music and Flint Institute of Arts will share nearly $5 million in grants.
The money will go toward maintenance, staffing and programming costs.
Kathryn Sharbaugh, development director for the FIA, says the grant will help the museum preserve its collections, including one she says gives visitors a sense of the Flint community.
"[The collection] is called Artists of the Great Lakes, and it depicts all the people that came into this community to work," she said. "[It shows visitors] what Flint was once was like and the promise of what it's going to be like as we move into the next decades."
Sharbaugh says the money will also help sustain education and outreach programs for a broad range of ages, including infants and seniors.
"[The FIA] touches people right when they're newborns," she said. "Then, we work with people when they're no longer able to communicate in the way they've been able to earlier in their lives."
The Longway Planetarium, Sloan Museum and Flint Symphony Orchestra are a few of the other institutions the Mott Foundation grants will help support.
