"You know it's spring in Michigan when Bell's Brewery releases Oberon," Tammy Coxen of Tammy's Tastings said, adding, "Beer cocktails have become a really popular thing over the last few years and Oberon is a really great addition to this drink."
The Oberon Sour tastes a bit like a traditional whiskey sour, but with an additional couple of notes. Coxen says the taste of hops from the Oberon and the barspoon of orange marmalade give it a unique and fun spin to that classic cocktail.
According to Kalamazoo-based Bell's Brewery's website, "Bell's Oberon is a wheat ale fermented with Bell's signature house ale yeast, mixing a spicy hop character with mildly fruity aromas. The addition of wheat malt lends a smooth mouthfeel, making it a classic summer beer."
Sticking with Michigan, Coxen's choice of whiskey for this cocktail is Grass Widow Bourbon from Two James Spirits in Detroit.
The distiller describes the whiskey as, "...a unique high rye mash bill. This delicious bourbon possesses intriguing levels of spice and complexity. The hazelnut and dried raisin notes are results of our proprietary Madeira Barrique finishing. Two James is excited to become a part of and honor the glory of Detroit’s whiskey roots with the resurrection of the Grass Widow name."
