Cass Tech teacher Marilyn McCormick will give a speech at the 70th Annual Tony Awards

The Tony Award for Excellence in Theatre Education was awarded to Detroit teacher Marilyn McCormick. She was picked out of 1,100 candidates who were nominated by people across the country. McCormick will be recognized during the live Tony Award broadcast on June 12. In addition, the Cass Technical performing arts program will receive a $10,000 grant.

McCormick will be retiring at the end of this year.  “[My students] know that life is not easy, but they also know how to persevere. They keep their shoulder to the plow and they don’t quit. They work for excellence. They are not willing to settle for mediocrity,” she said.

The Tony Awards released a video in McCormick's honor.
