In the second installment of our series showcasing the Detroit music scene we welcome back to Stateside Paul Young, founder and publisher of Detroit Music Magazine and Khalid Bhatti, executive editor of Detroit Music Magazine, to introduce three more talented artists.
First is Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas, a band reminiscent of Amy Winehouse but with a bilingual flair. The group’s latest release came in the form of a double album, recorded in both English and Spanish. Hernandez grew up working her parents’ Mexicantown restaurant and bakery, Bhatti said, and combined her background with Detroit’s rich music history to influence her own work.
Originally from Detroit, Matthew Dear has been in the music producing business for years, but recently released a song under his own name for the first time since 2012. Dear, who has toured and recorded with artists under other names, draws on the genres of techno, dance rock and alt pop to inform his work.
Finally, Protomartyr is a Detroit punk band that’s a favorite of Detroit Music Magazine. Young describes it as dark, gloomy and gripping. The band’s reputation has grown in the Detroit area over the past few years, Young said.
