Tammy Coxen was coughing.
“I did a really stupid thing,” she said, explaining, “I told my friends, ‘It’s been great; I haven’t gotten sick all year.’ Now, I have a cold.”
There’s a drink for that. Well, there wasn’t, but Coxen, of Tammy’s Tastings, came up with one.
“This is Tammy’s Cure-All,” she said between coughs.
Her inspiration was trying to put all the things people say are good for fighting a cold: orange juice, ginger, lemon juice, and honey.
For the alcohol, she used a barrel-aged rum from New Holland called Freshwater Barrel Rum.
“I really enjoy this rum,” Coxen said. “It’s quite nuanced for a Michigan rum,” she added.
This is a smash in that the fruit ingredients are muddled together. Coxen says you can adjust this to your own preferences, less citrus, more citrus, more sweet, less sweet. Whatever you like.
The drink is tart, a nice balance of sweet, and delicious.
After Coxen took a sip of the drink, she shouted, “I’m cured! I feel so much better.”
Your recovery might not be as quick. ; )
Tammy’s Cure-All
2 slices ginger
1 slice blood orange (regular orange will do)
2 oz rum (New Holland Freshwater Barrel Rum)
1/2 oz honey syrup (2 parts honey mixed with 1 part water)
1/2 oz lemon juice
Add ginger slices to cocktail shaker and muddle well. Cut blood orange slice into quarters, add to shaker, and muddle. Add remaining ingredients and ice. Shake well and strain into rocks glass over fresh ice.
