Young says that Detroit techno artist Black Noi$e's unique style is informed by electronic inspirations, house, techno, trap, and even hip-hop.

New year, new Detroit music. Paul Young of Detroit Music Magazine tells us about some of Detroit's best upcoming artists in hip-hop and techno. Plus, he reflects on the death of legendary Big Chief guitarist Phil Dürr.

"Bloxk Party" by Sada Baby & Drego

Young describes Sada Baby as a talented dancer and "regional favorite," whose association with popular rapper Tee Grizzley has helped augment his fame. Sada Baby's lyrics feature clever and sometimes unexpected references — like the line from his song "Triple Double" that doubles as a nod to the Adam Sandler film The Waterboy. His next project, Bartier Bounty, will be released January 25.

"Superstupid" by Big Chief

Phil Dürr, a popular guitarist who played with bands like Big Chief, Five Horse Johnson, Luder, and more, passed away January 11 from a heart attack. A fixture of the Detroit punk and rock scene, Dürr was known for his "face-melting guitar playing" and kind soul. A memorial will be held for Dürr at the Magic Bag in Ferndale on January 29.

"Ninety6" by Black Noi$e

Rob Mansel, also known as Black Noi$e, recently released his first LP Illusions. The artist's unique style is informed by electronic inspirations, house, techno, trap, and even hip-hop. Young says that although Black Noi$e isn't afraid to flex his "experimental muscle," he's also "clearly a student of the game" who's aware of the lasting legacies that techno, electronic, and house musical styles have in the city of Detroit.
