Welcome to Songs from the Trail!
"Songs from the Trail" is a show about and dedicated to music in Michigan that broadcasts weekly on WVBI on Beaver Island in the middle of Lake Michigan.
Hosts Jackson Smith and Steve Girbach bring this special edition of the program to Michigan Radio to round out your summer playlist. They also talk to Detroit music producer, musician, and composer Luis Resto.
Resto is perhaps best known for his work with rapper Eminem, and the awards they won together with producer Jeff Bass on the soundtrack to the movie "8 Mile". But he's embraced more wholly in Detroit as a serious fusion artist who opens up a space for jam sessions in Eastern Market to the public.
Co-host Jackson Smith is a touring musician, and part of Detroit rock music royalty as the son of Patti Smith and MC5's Fred Smith.
Co-host Steve Girbach is also a musician and longtime Southeast Michigan music enthustiast, and co-owner of an intimate music venue in Manchester, Michigan; Manchester Underground.
As with so many things in life, everything changed for Smith and Girbach during the pandemic as live music and performance came to a screeching halt. It's in that void that Smith and Girbach began "Songs from the Trail" on WVBI. Hear more of their story in this Stateside interview.
