The Congressional Black Caucus' five-city "For the People" Jobs Fair is on its second stop in Detroit today. The fair kicked off in Cleveland last week and will end in Los Angeles at the end of the month.
Michigan Radio's Sarah Cwiek will head over to the fair at the downtown campus of Wayne County Community College and give us an update.
The fair is being hosted by U.S. Representatives Hansen Clarke (D-13th district) and John Conyers (D-14th district) at 1001 W. Fort St. in Detroit from 9 to 5:30 p.m.
A town hall meeting will follow from 6 to 8 p.m.
In a press release, the Congressional Black Caucus' Chairman, Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO) says the job fairs and town hall meetings are the CBC's effort to address the "joblessness crisis":
“As reported African American unemployment remains stagnant at 16.2%, it has become clear that it is time for immediate and real action to provide hard working Americans with real economic opportunity,” said Chairman Emanuel Cleaver.
2,000 jobs are reportedly available at the jobs fair today in Detroit. You can see a list of employers attending the fair on WDIV's website.
MLive reported last week that Monster Worldwide Inc. listed the Detroit Metro area as the top job growth market of all the major metropolitan markets in the country because "classified employment advertising was up 34 percent compared to last July."
