Mayor Mike Duggan held an event today at Messiah Baptist Church to update Detroiters on the hiring process for Fiat-Chrysler jobs.
Fiat Chrysler is expanding its Jefferson North plant, and reviving the defunct Mack Avenue Assembly facility. That's expected to create nearly 5,000 new jobs.
Detroit At Work job readiness officials have been hosting hundreds of events preparing thousands of residents to apply for the openings.
Nicole Sherard Freeman, president of the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation, says Detroit residents get priority in the hiring process..
“Detroiters get priority, and that was part of what Mayor Duggan and city council worked so hard on before the FCA deal was approved,” she says.
Freeman says residents who live in "high impact" zones in nearby zip codes: 48213, 48214 and 48215 get even earlier access to the job openings.
“The incredible thing about all of this is that this is only the beginning,” she says. “Obviously, these events have all been FCA focused, and there have been close to a couple hundred, all FCA focused. But there have been other employers that have come in as well.”
She says job applications are expected to open at the end of August.
