An Ann Arbor pickling business hopes "crowd funding" will pay for a lot of sauerkraut – 12 thousand pounds to be exact.
Dave Klingenberger is Chief Fermentation Officer at The Brinery. He says he hopes Kickstarter - a pledge drive website – will help him raise the money to double their production. And, he says, pledges are coming in all sizes. “People are pledging anything from 1 dollar on up to a thousand dollars and for each pledge level there’s a reward.”
Klingenberger says he’s reached a little more than a third of his goal and has two weeks left in the project to go. But he said it will probably be like most fundraising efforts -- achieving the goal right at the end. “There’s that sense of immediacy, of like alright we’ve got 1 more minute to get 35 new donors. And so I think a lot of people are going to help us out at the very end. Because if we don’t raise the full 12 thousand dollars, then we get zero dollars.”
Klingenberger says if he is successful he will donate a portion of the sauerkraut to Food Gatherers – a Michigan food rescue charity.
