Flint’s tallest building will come crashing down close to Christmas.
Officials announced today, the 19-story Genesee Towers building will be imploded on December 22nd at 10am.
Built in 1968, the building suffered decades of neglect. The office tower has sat mostly empty for more than a decade. The city eventually condemned the building. A judge ordered the city of Flint to purchase the 45-year-old building in 2007.
The city sold the Genesee Towers for a dollar earlier this year, clearing the way for the building’s demolition next month.
“We’re very excited to have this building come down and it further helps us with development in the downtown area,” says Tim Herman, the president of Flint’s Uptown Reinvestment Corporation.
Dave Lurvey is the demolition project manager. He expects no problems bringing down the building, which is located in a crowded part of downtown Flint.
“The plan is to bring the building down to the south and to the east….so that it will spill into its own footprint and slightly outside that perimeter of that footprint on the south,” says Lurvey.
After the debris is taken away, the site will be turned into an outdoor, hands-on science park.
