Detroit casino workers approve new labor agreement

After months of negotiations, union members at Detroit's three casinos - MGM Grand Detroit, MotorCity and Greektown - ratified a new contract on Sunday.

The Detroit Casino Council, a consortium of the UAW Local 7777, Unite Here Local 24, Teamsters Local 372 and the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324, reached a tentative agreement with the casinos last week.

The deal replaces a contract that expired on Oct. 16 and covers approximately 6,000 workers.

The agreement was approved by 76% at MGM Grand; 85% at MotorCity; and 95% at Greektown, according to an update posted on the Unite Here Local 24 website.

Gains for workers include a $4,250 lump sum signing bonus for full-time workers, wage increases in the fourth and fifth years of the contract, and maintaining current health care plans with no additional premium costs.

Health care was a sticking point during negotiations.

Detroit leaders kept a close eye on the labor deal because of the amount of tourism and tax revenue provided by the casinos.

The contracts take effect immediately.

Union or casino representatives could not be reached for comment Monday.
