“Run of the Dead” – a Día de los Muertos Celebration
The Southwest Detroit Business Association presents the 2022 “Run of the Dead” 5K/10K run/walk from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 5 at the George S. Patton Park Recreation Center, 2301 Woodmere in Southwest Detroit. The event celebrates the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), which honors deceased relatives and loved ones. In commemoration of the holiday, the run will take competitors through two historic cemeteries and an ofrenda (altar) will be created and displayed by a local artist. The community is invited to participate by bringing family photos of their ancestors to add to the altar and wearing traditional Día de los Muertos face paint, flowers, and attire. Halloween and non-traditional costumes are discouraged.
In its first 2 years, the USATF-Certified “Run of the Dead” grew from 600 runners to nearly 2,000. The run provides 5k and 10k options and welcomes runners and walkers. Registration for both the 5k and 10k is $30 but will increase to $50 after October 16. Participants can enjoy local treats and variety of live entertainment during the event.
The event is a fundraiser for the Center of Music & Performing Arts Southwest (COMPÁS), which preserves the Latinx heritage of Southwest Detroit and celebrates its diversity through the arts.
