musical of, for, and by the people.”

Broadway’s Next Hit Musical is the only unscripted
theatrical awards show. Have you heard of the Tony Awards? Well, Broadway’s Next Hit Musical is … The PHONY Awards! The audience members write down made up song titles and our master improvisers gather these suggestions and present them as “nominated songs” for this coveted award. We create spontaneous scenes and songs filled with great dancing, catchy melodies, and tons of laughter. The audience votes for their favorite song and watches as the cast turns that song into a full-blown improvised musical, complete with memorable characters, witty dialogue, and plot twists galore.

North Country Opera: Live at The Ark returns to the big screen, at the State Theatre in Ann Arbor, to help support communities in need. All profits from the event will be donated to Ann Arbor-based Pilar’s Foundation to support organizations that serve the most vulnerable communities, here in Washtenaw County and around the world.

A reception in the theater lobby precedes the screening, where attendees are treated to hors-d’oeuvres provided by local restaurants. Cash bar provided by State Theatre. Reception in the theater lobby begins at 6:00 PM; movie begins at 7:00 PM.

State Senator Sue Shink, a board member of Pilar’s Foundation, will offer a few comments before the screening on the importance of grass roots fundraising efforts.

And, in North Country Opera tradition, any attendee wearing plaid will be entered in a drawing for a Stormy Kromer hat - an iconic symbol of Michigan’s upper peninsula - donated by the Stormy Kromer factory in Ironwood, MI.

In Shakespeare’s famous tragedy, Romeo and Juliet meet at a party and it is love at first
sight. However, the long-standing feud between their families threatens to keep them
apart. Violence and bloodshed ensue as they navigate forbidden love and its fatal
consequences.

Performances of Romeo & Juliet will be April 24-26 and May 1-3 at 7:30 p.m. with
matinees on April 27 and May 4 that begin at 2:30p.m. All performances will take place
on the campus of Rochester Christian University at 800 W. Avon Road, Rochester Hills,
MI 48307, in the Richardson Academic Center Theater. Tickets are $5 for students and
$18 for adults, with discounts available for seniors, veterans, and alumni. Tickets can be
purchased online anytime and our in-person box office opens an hour before each

Theatre NOVA Presents the World Premiere of
Eclipsed: The Sun, The Moon, and Gladys Atkinson Sweet by D.L. Patrick

On the night of September 9, 1925, Gladys Atkinson Sweet was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, along with her husband, Dr. Ossian Sweet, his two brothers and seven other African Americans following the attack on her home. They were well-educated, well-respected, talented people who would have been assets to any community. Although much has been written about Dr. Sweet and the two Sweet trials, litigated by Clarence Darrow, this play imagines the perspective of Gladys Sweet and the women who populated her life. It is about what women do, and have always done, in the shadows.

When it comes to Creole culture and Zydeco music, two-time Grammy award-winning Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience represent well, with the past, the present, and the future of Black roots music. This six piece, multigenerational, and multicultural group is highly skilled, formally trained, and are very experienced performers, and in every profession, experience still matters—a lot!

True to himself and his deep Creole roots, Simien personifies authenticity as he pushes the boundaries of his genre to elevate its visibility. Now enjoying OG (legendary) status of an accomplished 40+ year career, Simien—with his loyal bandmates and creative collaborators—has toured to more than 40+ countries and performed over 7,500 concerts. Their Creole for Kidz and the History of Zydeco educational program and performance developed 24 years ago for K-12 and college students has helped raise the cultural IQ of more than 250,000 students, parents, and teachers around the globe.

In 2009, Simien was called by the head of music at Disney to collaborate with the legendary songwriter Randy Newman on a song for an historic animated film The Princess and the Frog set in New Orleans. This movie featured Disney's first ever Black princess, Princess Tiana: an aspiring chef. The word zydeco was actually spoken in the film by Ray the Firefly, a main character who stole our hearts.
