Undisputed masters of their craft, The Gipsy Kings have sold more than 20 million albums worldwide and have been awarded numerous gold, platinum and diamond records, as well as a Grammy Award in 2013 for the Best World Music album Savor Flamenco. The band is featured on the film soundtrack for The Big Lebowski with their rendition of “Hotel California,” along with the soundtrack for Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story III, with their cover of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.”
The band, whose members have Catalan heritage, play a blend of Catalan rumba, flamenco, salsa, and pop. They perform mostly in Spanish but also utilize Catalan and French. It has been more than 25 years since the Gipsy Kings captured the world’s imagination with their self-titled debut album, Luna de Fuego – a record that became a genuine phenomenon, certified gold and platinum around the globe, introducing millions of listeners to a unique, irresistible blend of traditional flamenco styles with Western pop and Latin rhythms. Since then, the band has toured virtually nonstop, to the farthest-flung corners of the planet, and sold almost twenty million albums, all while retaining the same lineup of virtuoso musicians.
The Gipsy Kings have spent a remarkable two-and-a-half decades at the top, in a category that’s all their own. Yet in those occasional periods when they aren’t touring, the band members still live with their families in the south of France, the area that defined their identities and their sound.
