June 29, 2019 @8 pm
Power Center, Ann Arbor
Michigan Radio is a media sponsor of the Ann Arbor Summer Festival, presenting Evolution of a Sonero at the Power Center. Poet and singer, Flaco Navaja delivers an ode to his upbringing in the Bronx and Latino culture with a fusion of comedy, poetry and music.
Special onstage, black-box performance. Limited seating available.
“I be the son of hardcore South Bronx Puerto Rican nationalists. An aguinaldo, bomba y plena, salsa, rhumba singing actor-activist.” This self-declaration opens celebrated poet Flaco Navaja’s Evolution of a Sonero. Part coming of age story, part love letter to salsa and the Bronx, Evolution of a Sonero delivers a testament to human resilience in a spirited concert tribute. Backed by five world-class musicians, Flaco Navaja draws from Héctor Lavoe, The Doors, KRS-1, and many humorous friends and family that shaped him. Join an intimate audience on the Power Center stage and witness the culmination of Navaja’s twenty years performing internationally for Def Jam, MC’ing the Nuyorican Poets Cafe, and as a sonero emblematic of American Boricua.
Winners receive 2 tickets.
