A survey of Michigan employers suggests more hiring is in store this year.
The Business Leaders for Michigan survey quizzes some of the state’s largest employers, representing about a third of the state’s economy. It finds more than half are optimistic about prospects for the next six to 18 months, says BLM’s Kelly Chesney.
“They’re feeling optimistic because the economy is growing again,” she says. “We’re seeing lower energy costs. These all translate into a growing confidence for our employers.”
Sixty percent of the employers expect the state’s and the nation’s economy to expand over the next six to 18 months. Chesney says that should lead to more hiring and investment.
“Manufacturing, service industries, a number of furniture manufacturers – all across the spectrum we’re seeing a large number of our employers that are forecasting hiring.”
Michigan’s unemployment rate has dropped steadily, but remains above the national average. The survey does not address wages, which have largely remained stagnant.
