A project to redevelop an old steel mill south of Detroit is getting over $2 million in grants and loans from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
State officials say much of the money will go toward cleaning up the site of the former McLouth Steel plant in Gibraltar.
"It's a big process for a developer to come in and reuse a facility such as McLouth Steel Plant," said Michelle Bakun, DEQ grant and loan coordinator.
"The facility has a lot of abandoned materials, things like used oils and sludges, so many of those things will have to be removed," Bakun said.
Last spring, the Ferrous CAL Company purchased the former steel mill.
The Ohio-based company says its redevelopment plans for the site will bring over 100 new jobs to Michigan.
