Whether you're a 65-year-old senior VP whose job has been eliminated or a 22-year-old with a freshly minted degree, trying to land a job is scary stuff.
Michigan native Matt Durfee has recruited for some of the biggest companies in the nation, and he has lost his job and had to navigate his way to a new position – not once, but several times.
Durfee’s new book, The Job Search Navigator: An Expert's Guide to Getting Hired, Surviving Layoffs, and Building Your Career highlights job search strategies for job seekers with varied backgrounds.
The book includes 70 “Durfee’s Laws,” which help readers negotiate the job search, from how to craft a resume to tips on how to manage stress.
One of the most important things to do he says is study for that interview.
“Most people will spend more time and money on a couple rounds of golf than learning how to get a job that will change their lives."
Some advice for beginners, as well as veteran job seekers: if nothing else focus on the "objective" part of the resume.
“If I don’t see that objective at the top of the resume chances are I’m going to spend maybe five seconds on that resume before I decide to either put it in the reject pile or put it in the pile where I’m going to come back to revisit it as a potential candidate.”
