The Cleveland Metropolitan school district selected an internal candidate to be the next CEO at a special meeting this morning. Grand Rapids Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor was a finalist for the opening.
It was the second time this year Grand Rapids Public Schools’ Superintendent Dr. Bernard Taylor became a finalist for a job opening at another school district.
Taylor was also a finalist in March for a superintendent job at a different school in New York. Just before he was passed over for the job, Taylor withdrew his candidacy, saying he felt compelled to stay in Grand Rapids.
Since taking over Grand Rapids Public Schools five years ago, nearly 60% more schools in the district are meeting federal ‘no child left behind’ standards. Taylor led the state’s third largest public school district through a number of controversial changes to the way students are taught.
Grand Rapids schools plans a press conference later this morning about the announcement.
