Schools in Genesee and Lapeer counties will be closed tomorrow and Friday, amid threats circulated on social media.
From the Genesee Co. Intermediate School District Web site:
"Our communities are anxious, parents are concerned about the safety of their children, there are rumors that have multiplied as a result of social media, and there are threats within local districts that bring pause as to whether conducting classes would be appropriate. We have discussed information from local law enforcement, the realities of being able to investigate every threat, information related to district sensitivities, and our concerns about whether a normal instructional day could be achieved. Our conclusion is that canceling school is the appropriate thing to do."
Earlier today, Michigan Radio's Steve Carmody reported:
"Threats of an armed ‘student revolt’ are raising concerns in a half dozen Genesee County school districts. The threats started swirling on social media sites this week. They started after last week’s school massacre in Connecticut, and mention the "end of the world" Mayan prophecy believed set for tomorrow. < div=""> < div=""> <> <> < div=""> < div=""> “It’s been really nerve wracking to be honest with you," Grand Blanc schools superintendent Norm Abdella said, adding that students have been sharing the ‘student revolt’ messages online.< div=""> <> < div=""> Abdella says police are talking with students who shared the messages, adding this has gone beyond 'being a school matter.'" <> <> <>
