Former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn Kelly joined the Wayne State University Law School faculty this week.
Jocelyn Benson is the interim Dean of the law school. She says students, staff, and alumni are excited for all that Kelly will bring to University.
"Our students are going to benefit from her years of expertise and our other faculty members are already benefiting from having her here and sharing her insights, input and her experiences with all of us."
Justice Kelly was forced into retirement earlier this year because of an age restriction in the state constitution that bars judicial candidates from serving in office if they are 70 or older. As a result of this, Benson says she is hopeful that teaching will provide a new platform for Kelly to speak out about her unique insight for students.
"Justice Kelly has been both a leader in our state and a national leader to promote improved ethics and transparency for how we select our supreme court justices - so we certainty hope to provide an opportunity for her to continue that work."
Kelly has been named the school's first 'distinguished jurist in residence' and is expected to begin teaching classes in the fall.
