The financially troubled Michigan school districts of Inkster and Buena Vista have until 5 p.m. Monday, July 22 to prove they have the money to run their school districts and that they have plans to eliminate their deficits.
State Treasurer Andy Dillon and Superintendent of Schools Mike Flanagan informed the districts of that deadline today.
If they don't meet the deadline, the school systems could be dissolved by the state. A recently passed law, PA 96 of 2013, gives state officials that power.
More from Chad Livengood over at the Detroit News:
After determining the two small school districts met the criteria to be dissolved, Dillon recommended giving Inkster and Buena Vista school officials a few days to secure short-term financing. Dillon also wants letters from the district’s accounting firms confirming the loans will be enough money to keep the doors open for the entire 2013-14 school year. If the two districts can’t secure financing by the deadline, the state and intermediate school districts in Saginaw and Wayne counties will move forward with dissolving Buena Vista and Inkster schools, Dillon said.
