Wayne State University offers in-state tuition to undocumented students

Wayne State University will begin charging in-state tuition to undocumented students. The decision is part of a policy change that now ties tuition to students' high school diplomas, instead of their residency status.

Students who went to a Michigan high school for at least three years and graduated are now eligible for in-state tuition. Students who got their GED in Michigan are also eligible for in-state tuition.

Provost Margaret Winters says the change is good for all students.

"What we did in the change of policy was to make things more equitable in general, not just for the undocumented students, though they're part of it of course, but also for other students," she said.

Winters says that's because the policy change will also benefit students who moved to Michigan during high school, or who moved out of state after graduating from a Michigan high school.

"We're quite pleased that it's gone through for tuition equality and for Wayne State's history of access and opportunity that this was the right thing to do," she said.

Winters says in-state tuition saves students about $13,000 a year.

Wayne State's decision comes just after the University of Michigan's announcement that it will offer in-state tuition to undocumented students.
