The Saginaw school board is expected to vote tonight on a deficit elimination plan.
The plan calls for major changes to the district, which is facing a multimillion dollar deficit.
The state education department is threatening to withhold the district’s February state aid payment unless a new deficit elimination plan is submitted by Monday.
In a letter sent to Saginaw school superintendent last month, state education department officials note the district slipped into deficit in the 2010-11 school year. The letter claims the district is “not making significant changes” to reduce its deficit.
The new plan on the table includes layoffs and school closings, most notably the closing of Saginaw High School. The district would merge Saginaw’s two public high schools.
Saginaw is just one of dozens of Michigan school districts struggling with budget deficits.
Two Michigan school districts (Buena Vista and Inkster) were dissolved last year, after failing to come up with a plan to solve their money problems.
