DETROIT- Two Michigan school districts have each received nearly $100,000 in federal grants to bring locally grown food to school cafeterias.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the grants to Detroit Public Schools and the Waterford School District on Tuesday.
Detroit schools will receive $97,000 while Waterford schools will get $98,000 through the department's Farm to School Program.
The program helps schools source healthy foods including fruits, vegetables, meat and dairy, and also educates students through school garden programs and farm visits.
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow says the program gives needed supported to Michigan farmers while encouraging students to eat healthy foods.
Detroit Public Schools says the grant will impact its 62,000 students and their communities.
