The Michigan state police picked more than 80 public, private and charter schools to share $4 million as part of the Competitive School Safety Grant Program.
Nancy Becker-Bennett, director of the MSP’s grants and community services division, said schools all over the state applied for the program.
“After Sandy Hook, after everything else that’s gone on in the schools, I think a lot of people are very cognizant of the fact that anyone can walk into many schools in our state,” Becker-Bennett said.
To choose which schools received the funds, the MSP focused on those with plans to better secure points of entry.
“A lot of schools [that applied] had really old doors that they said basically couldn’t really be locked,” Becker-Bennett said.
“We’re hoping that [the schools] have a feeling of enhanced security,” she said. “[We hope] that parents, visitors, staff, students, everyone has a feeling of enhanced security in their school buildings.”
The selected schools have until mid-September to spend their money.
