This week, Flint Community Schools will take an important step toward finding its next permanent superintendent.
An interim superintendent has overseen the district since Bilal Tawwab was let go this past spring. Former emergency manager Gregory Weatherspoon was hired in March to serve as interim superintendent.
District officials will interview the three finalists for the superintendent job on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The plan is to have the new superintendent in place by the beginning of September.
Flint’s next superintendent will take over a school district that last week signed an agreement with the state Education Department.
The agreement brings the district more resources to improve standardized test scores, increase attendance and reduce suspensions.
However, if Flint schools fail to meet the agreement’s benchmarks, during the next 18 to 36 months, the district could face closure or a takeover.
