Tuesday is the first day of school for many children in Michigan.
In Flint, about two dozen motorcycles greeted students as they arrived for classes at Doyle Ryder elementary. Some students covered their ears as riders throttled up their engines to a low roar.
“The first day of school is always exciting for everyone,” says Flint School Superintendent Derrick Lopez.
“We do want to make sure our families and children in Flint realize that we are embracing them with our hearts, our heads and our minds,” added Lopez.
This is also Lopez’ first day of school in Flint.
He was hired as Flint’s new school superintendent over the summer.
