Mosquitoesare expected to be an even bigger annoyance than usual for Michiganders this summer. Heavy rains in April and May have set the stage for a big burst of mosquitoes in Michigan this year.
Tom Wilmot is the Midland County Mosquito Control director. He says the wide spread standing water in backyards, open fields and wooded areas creates ideal breeding grounds for early season mosquitoes.
"Even in areas that have mosquito control programs, there is going to be a noticeable number of adult mosquitoes for a while. And in those areas that don’t have organized mosquito control, it’s going to be very noticeable.”
Wilmot says repeated heavy rains in recent weeks have made it difficult for local mosquito control programs to try to eradicate the pests.
Wilmot recommends anyone planning on spending a lot of time outdoors to use anti-mosquito sprays with DEET and wearing long sleeve shirts and long pants.
