The safety of west Michigan’s Palisades nuclear power plant will be the topic of a public meeting tonight in South Haven.
Palisades has one of the worst safety ratings in the country.
Maintenance mistakes and other problems led to four unscheduled reactor shutdowns at Palisades in 2011. And there have been more problems this year.
“We know people are concerned. We want to be able to talk to them about what has been done about those things,” says Viktoria Mitlyng, a Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman.
Mitlyng says tonight the plant’s owners and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will try to answer an important question about Palisades.
“Is there an environment at the plant where everybody from management to plant workers make safety a priority over anything else?,” says Mitlyng.
Next week, NRC inspectors will begin a 10 day on-site inspection at Palisades. Their findings are due in November.
Palisades went online 41 years ago. The nuclear power plant was purchased by Entergy in 2007.
