The dog days of summer - heat wave to end soon

Tony Brown

Right on cue, the Ann Arbor Art Fairs opened during the hottest week we’ve had yet this summer.

According to the National Weather Service, an excessive heat warning is in effect this afternoon through Friday, with heat index values of 105 degrees in southeast Michigan today.

There is a slight chance of severe thunderstorms today and tonight throughout southeast Michigan. Mark Torregrossa from MLive reports that severe weather is likely – strong winds and hail – in the Upper Peninsula today.

By Friday night, a cold front will bring relief from the heat throughout the state. Thunderstorms across the state are likely.

While the heat shouldn’t last much longer, here are some tips to remember.

For yourself:

(According to the National Weather Service)

  • Slow down – reduce strenuous activity
  • Dress in light white, light-colored clothing
  • Drink plenty of water, avoiding alcohol and caffeine (which are dehydrating)
  • Reduce exposure to sun, sun burns make it harder for your body to deal with heat

For animals:

(According to the Humane Society)

  • Never leave pets in a parked car
  • Humidity makes it harder for animals to stay cool
  • Limit exercise on hot days
  • Don’t rely on a fan – pets respond differently to heat and fans do little to cool them off
  • Provide pets lots of shade and water
  • Cool your pets with cold food! Here is a recipe for peanut butter popsicles for dogs

And on a lighter note, checkout some of these hot dogs, they may inspire your summer taste buds and little cooking is required!
