Staff at the Palisades Nuclear Plant will highlight the work done to update the plant, during a public open house in South Haven tonight.
Spokeswoman Lindsay Rose says they’ll talk about a big project to replace almost all the control rod drives that have been problematic over the past decade.
“We also conducted our reactor vessel inspections during our refueling outage so we have a really, really neat video that shows some of the inside of our vessel,” Rose said.
Rose says that inspection shows the vessel is strong enough to continue operating through 2031. Federal regulators will still have to approve that.
This spring, federal regulators raised concerns about safety culture among security workers.
Rose says they’ve made changes to improve the working environment .
“Now every time there’s a security team on shift, whether that be in the middle of the night or the holiday, they always have a member of their leadership team available to answer their questions or assist them with problems,” she said.
The open house will take place from 5-7 p.m. at the Beach Haven Event Center in South Haven.
