Wild horses and burros up for adoption in Michigan this weekend

Red Horse Ranch

Anyone who's ever dreamed of owning a mustang will get their chance in southwest Michigan this weekend.

Sorry, car enthusiasts. We're not talking about Fastbacks and GTs.

These are wild horses the U.S. Bureau of Land Management is offering for adoption at the Red Horse Ranch in Cassopolis this Saturday.

It's part of the BLM's effort to help control herd populations in western range states, where food and water can become scarce if there are too many animals.

Around 60 wild horses and burros will be available for adoption on a first come, first served basis.

Adoption fees range from $25 to $125.

Suzette Hudak, Red Horse Ranch owner, said owning a mustang can be rewarding, but potential adopters should already have some experience.

"They're still wild, so you have to have the right facility until you've got them trained to live within the pasture," she said. "Like all horses, when you've created a bond with them, they're way more willing to do what you ask them to do."

Hudak said when the ranch hosted the event two years ago, all but a few of the animals were adopted.
