Public meetings scheduled to discuss declining wolf population on Isle Royale

Four public meetings have been scheduled to discuss the wolf and moose population on Isle Royale National Park.

There are only three wolves left on Isle Royale. The population has dropped by almost 90% since 2009.

Wolfs are predators. Therefore, researchers are concerned that the moose population will increase to a dangerous amount.

The National Park Service says they are developing a plan to deal with the decreasing wolf population.

Phyllis Green is the park's superintendent.

She says that the meetings will discuss different options for how to respond, including re-introducing the wolves to the area or moving some moose to a different location.

"To formally enter into the planning process, you have to supply a written comment," Green said. "So it's important that people access the website or send us a letter."

Comments can be submitted until August 29. You can view the meeting schedules online
