Hundreds of people are expected to gather in Port Huron Sunday to rally against a proposal to store nuclear waste in an underground repository near Lake Huron.
Ontario Power hopes to build a deep geological repository to store low- to medium-level nuclear waste that’s already on the site of one of the biggest nuclear power plants in the world.
“Having nuclear waste dug deep under the ground does not sound like a safe idea and I don’t think a lot of people really want to go for it,” Valerie Daggett said. She’s helping organize the rally.
She hopes the event will inform people and keep pressure on officials to deny the repository.
“I think voices are a lot stronger when they’re together and as they collect you feel stronger and stronger. I think it’s really important in this day and age to have that sense of hope that we can do something,” she said.
A Canadian advisory panel has endorsed the plan to build the repository. But a final decision isn’t expected until after October.
