U.S. Rep. Tlaib asks EPA to help clean up second Sayers-owned property

Democratic US Representative Rashida Tlaib of Detroit is asking the U.S. EPA to help clean up another contaminated property owned by Gary Sayers. Sayers owns a warehouse in Detroit as well as Electro-Plating Services in Madison Heights.

The EPA already did a cleanup of Electro-Plating Services in 2017. That was before green liquid spilled off the site onto I-696 last month. The EPA has come back to help the state deal with that new problem.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Fire Department inspected a Sayers-owned warehouse in Detroit close to Henry Ford Medical Center, and found suspected contamination there too. Test results are expected in the next week.

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has asked the EPA to assist in the cleanup of the warehouse, including developing a long term remediation plan.

The City of Madison Heights has sued Sayers in order to demolish the buildings at Electro-Plating Services. The trial is underway and is expected to wrap up in about a week.

Sayers meanwhile is serving an 11-month prison sentence in West Virginia for flouting state and federal laws on proper disposal of hazardous materials.
