More Michigan residents are seeking help at homeless shelters and warming centers this winter.

This week we aired a special State of Opportunity call-in program focused on disconnected youth. These are young people between the ages of 16 and 25, they're not in school and they're not working either.

We learned in the program that many of these young people face a number of obstacles. They may be dealing with mental health challenges or learning disabilities, they may be aging out of foster care or have unstable home environments. Some have had interactions with the juvenile justice system, and some are homeless. They all face major barriers to building a successful life that can carry them through adulthood.
