The Detroit Journalism Cooperative is an integrated community media network providing insight on the issues facing Detroit. How to talk about racism and unconscious bias

Professor Ron Hall: More and more as we get closer to the next century ... we're going to come to a time when you won't be able to look at individuals and differentiate their so-called race based on their hair texture, eye color, skin color." — "Step one is getting people to acknowledge there's a problem. I think to do that requires some self-awareness and some self-criticism. It's a place that most people aren't willing to go," Hood said.

Race is very difficult for people to talk about.

Many white people want to believe we’re in a post-racial society. After all, we have an African-American president.

Many black people note the inequalities that exist, the segregation that exists.

How can Americans begin to have a real discussion about race when we’ve been comfortable in our own beliefs about that subject for so long?

Lauren Hood works with groups to discuss racism and unconscious bias. She joined us today to talk about race relations in America and how we should go about having discussions about racism and unconscious bias.
