People in the city of Flint have been coping with a broken water system for a long time.
It was April 2014 when the city, under the direction of a state-appointed emergency manager, switched to a new water source to save money. The problems started soon after, and it was eventually discovered the city was facing a public health crisis as a result of that decision. People in Flint were exposed to elevated levels of lead in their drinking water.
Now another milestone... a year has passed since Mayor Karen Weaver declared a state of emergency in Flint.
Today, tests by the state and independent researchers show the drinking water is improving. And the federal government recently pledged $170 million to help the city. But when you visit the city and talk to some of the people living there, you’ll quickly discover something else broke in Flint: trust in government.
We’ve heard a lot from public officials, researchers, and other experts over the last year.
Now we’re asking people in Flint what they want people to know about their city today.
