New University of Michigan research finds a link between bullying and sleepiness. U of M researchers looked at students in Ypsilanti public schools and found students who got in trouble for bullying were twice as likely to be sleepy during the school day or suffer from sleep apnea.
Dr. Louise O’Brien is an assistant professor in U-M’s Sleep Disorders Center. “While we’re not suggesting poor sleep causes bullying in schools, I think it’s reasonable to suggest it might be a portion of poor behavior might be related to poor sleep."
O’Brien says young children need between 10 and 13 hours of sleep a day.
The U of M study was published in the journal Sleep Medicine.
