Genesee County hospital being urged to change sterilization policy

The ACLU is pressuring a Catholic hospital in Genesee County to change its policy on tubal ligations.

Jessica Mann is scheduled to undergo a Ceasarean section next month. It will be her third child, and she hopes her last.

Mann has a medical condition that would make having another pregnancy potentially fatal. But Genesys Regional Medical Center is refusing to give her doctor permission to perform a tubal ligation after Mann’s C-section.

Hospital officials say the sterilization procedure violates Catholic doctrine.

“This woman’s life is being put in danger because of an unnecessary policy that is solely based on religious belief and has nothing to do with medical standards of care,” says ACLU attorney Brooke Tucker.

The ACLU has given Genesys until Friday to reverse its decision. Tucker says the ACLU is considering its options if the hospital continues to say no to the doctor’s request to perform the procedure after Mann’s scheduled C-section.
